Peels have been a staple in professional skincare for many years.  Peels can diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores, hyperpigmentation and scars.  Many times when people think about peels they think of what Samantha’s face in Sex in the City when she got a peel.  That is not a typical reaction to having one.  There are also many different types and strengths of peels.  This type of exfoliation has been a favorite for a long time because of its ability to resurface and brighten the skin. Many aestheticians like to do series of treatments on their patients because they can see change gradually in as little as 6-12 weeks.  People want to get that healthy glow and brightening of the skin without the downtime.

Different peels for desired results

  • Light– This is the mildest type of professional peel.  Light peels are great to balance oil, brighten skin, and diminish appearance of light sun damage, lines, and wrinkles. Light peels are typically performed in a series of 6 treatments  2-4 weeks apart. One treatment will your skin a nice glow a series will give you long lasting changes.  Light peels can give you no flaking or a light visible exfoliation for a couple of days.  Light Peels are perfect for a pick me up with no down-time. Many people will opt for lighter peels when they do not have time to the desire to have flaking skin for more than 2-3 days.
  • Medium – Medium peels are best for correcting uneven skin tone, texture, age spots and deep hyperpigmentation . Medium peels soften fine lines, wrinkles, and are best for addressing uneven skin tone and discoloration, can be performed once or as part of a regimen. Exfoliation may be a little more visible with this type of peel.  Usually light flaking happens on the 3rd to 5th day.  Depending on your desired results you can talk to your aesthetician about how often this treatment can be done.
  • Medium Deep – Deep peels are only performed about once or twice every year. It targets more severe wrinkles pigmentation and sun damage. These peels are very beneficial for getting deeper results. Usually you can see flaking from 3 to 7 days depending on the peel and your skin.

So how do peels work?
Acids disrupt the bonds between dead skin cells. The depth of the exfoliation depends on the type of solution used and the amount of time of treatment. Once skin is exfoliated it repairs itself by flaking away the dead skin to reveal new fresh skin. Light peels are stronger than at-home exfoliation may leave skin slightly red or a bit flaky for a few days but is well worth it.
